Are you only taking a multi-vitamin? Here’s why you should consider a multi-nutrient

The body needs many nutrients to flourish. Combine this with a healthy diet plan and exercise and this is a solid foundation to more energy and a happier life. The question many of us ask is: should I be taking a multi-vitamin?

The short answer is yes. However, some think a multi-vitamin is not necessary.

Vitamins, according to the Merriam-Webster definition are “various organic substances that are essential.”

Many nutrients can be consumed through food. In fact, all of them can be. The problem is that there are over 40 different nutrients the body needs each day. As WebMD points out, “Even the best eating plans can fall short of meeting all of the 40-plus nutrients you need each day.”

The Debate

There is a debate going on as to whether there truly is a benefit of taking multi-vitamins. Some argue that studies have been conducted and show no real benefit at prolonging life. But the truth is many of these studies have been flawed.

According to the Journal of American College of Nutrition, published in 2015, around 40% of adults are not getting enough vitamins. In fact, these adults have vitamin deficiencies in vitamins A, C, D, E, magnesium, and calcium.

Another 2015 study in Postgraduate Medicine indicates around 68,000 cancers each year could be prevented by taking multivitamins.

Two Different Types:  Water-Soluble and Fat-Soluble

Certain vitamins remain in the body; others travel quickly through the body. The ones that do pass quickly through the body are known as “water-soluble vitamins.” Having an overabundance of these vitamins has no advantage because they leave the body daily.

Vitamins that leave the body quickly are Vitamin B and Vitamin C. On the other side, vitamins that can be stored in the body when in excess are Vitamin A, D, E, and K.

This just adds to list of reasons it’s important to take a multi-vitamin on a regular basis. Let your body get what it deserves!

Benefits of Multi-Vitamins

There are many benefits of taking multi-vitamins. Three of these include promoting longevity, heart health, and they make your hair and skin look better.

Promoting Longevity

The older a person gets their nutrient needs increase. In addition, it becomes harder to absorb nutrients. Necessary medications can further strip the body of nutrients.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, aging results in the immune system response being “reduced,” ultimately leading to more infections as well as cancer. “Taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement may bring other health benefits beyond any possible beneficial effects on the immune system.”

Immune System Health

Many vitamins aside from the beloved Vitamin C boost your immune system. While this vitamin plays a vital role, zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A help your body fight off unwanted invaders which is important as we age. In addition, vitamins can also decrease allergic symptoms.

Heart Health

Certain vitamins help out your heart. As heart disease is a major cause of death for women and men, this is important. Vitamins that reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease include the B vitamins (1,2,3,6).

Hair & Skin

Taking an array of vitamins and nutrients help you look better and be your vibrant happy self. Vitamin C can help keep your hair fuller. Vitamin A, E, and C team up to help your skin look better. Biotin (B7) and B3 (Niacin) help with hair health. At the end these vitamins all add up, helping enhance your appearance.

Overall Health

Taking vitamins as we age is important. Many report incorporating a multivitamin into their daily lives makes them feel better overall. This is due to an increase in energy levels, a decrease in stress and anxiety, and a reported feeling of overall wellness.

Is a multivitamin right for you? That is completely up to you, but the simplicity of taking one pill a day compared to numerous ones is definitely easier.

The State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables published a report in 2013 stating that many adults in the United States fail to get the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. On average, they eat fruit 1.1 times a day and vegetables 1.6 times a day.

The Havard School of Public Health calls a multivitamin an “inexpensive nutrition insurance policy,” and says people should try taking one every single day.

Ultimately, the choice is yours whether or not to invest in the small investment of looking out for your overall health. By making sure to get all of your necessary nutrients, maintaining a healthy diet, and exercising, you can be the healthiest version of you in the future to come!
